Founder's Story

Pastor Emory Goodman has had a heart for reaching the nations since the day he gave his life to the Lord. Shortly after being born-again, he and his family felt the call of God to head to Haiti, where they served for nearly five years. The Lord then opened the door of opportunity for Pastor Goodman to pastor a small church in Fayetteville, NC, which grew to a solid membership of several hundred over the years. During that time, he authored an in-depth discipleship curriculum (MTS) that continues to be very instrumental in maturing believers all across the world. Ministry Training School (MTS) has been translated into many different languages to include: Afrikaans, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Creole, and the Thai language. OceanSide wishes to give tribute and recognize the great legacy left by its founding pastor, Emory Goodman.  Emory left us, to be with the Lord, on March 8, 2018.  He was a great teacher filled with the knowledge of God and had an amazing ability to preach the Word to whomever the Lord brought each Sunday.  His passion was always the “church”, those who know the Lord and those who are yet searching. We remember his teachings to this day, forever grateful for his wisdom and for the time we all had with him. As a living, thriving legacy, OceanSide Christian Fellowship continues on the path established by Emory Goodman.

 Current Pastor's Story

Growing up in a Christian home, Pastor David Hughes knew about God all his life. From his early teen years, David played bass for various Christian quartets and served on the praise team in church. At the age of 19, God called him to the ministry, but David ran like Jonah. In fact, he ran for almost 30 years; although he continued to be involved in church and in worship. Through various circumstances, David slowly began to accept the calling to preach and entered seminary. While recovering from a major work accident, God called Pastor David and his family to the Dominican Republic, where the door opened for him to shepherd the flock at OceanSide Christian Fellowship. On top of serving in the church, David uses his 22 years of upholstery experience to teach local men this skill to help provide another avenue to enter the workforce. Pastor David’s motto is “serve more than being served” and strives to show Christ’s love to everyone he encounters. He lives in Sosua with his wife, Dr. Shala Lamothe-Hughes and their son, John. Shala is the STEM Director for an international school and teaches English as a second language to the local community. John is a high school student who finds ways to serve his home, church, school, and local community. David and Shala also have 4 adult children, 2 sons-in-love, and 2 grandsons living in the United States.
